I had earlier looked at battery powered amps as well. I had come across one that had decent power (I think 30 watts) that was meant for the education market. My recollection was that it was priced somewhere around $1000.00. Use the money you save to get a Mackie with a wireless mike and you shouldn't have to worry too much about cables. There are also some "personal monitors" that can mount on a microphone or music stand. Some of them can sound surprisingly good and might be worth a try. In general, any "portable" amp small enough to walk around with won't have enough clean power to give satisfactory results.
