Something I've used with success is a powered speaker. There are some expensive ones (Mackey, Roland) but I went with a Behringer B212 with a Shure Beta 87A and a small mixer. The speaker has a lot of power, and sounds pretty good. On it's own it can fill a 2000 seat concert hall fronting a 60 piece orchestra. Whatever you do, it will help to have a good quality vocal mike to start with.
